ASSESSMENT SKILLS OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS TEACHERS IN THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA, NIGERIA


Abstract This study investigated junior secondary school teachers' assessment skills in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population of this study comprised all 423 schools and 3,303 teachers at the JSS level in FCT. A multi stage random sampling technique was used to select I teachers from45 schools in the Area Council, making a total of 450 JSS teachers used for this study. The teachers' questionnaire was administered to 20 teachers in ten schools in Abaji Area Council that did not form part of the study area. Cronbach Alpha method of reliability was used to determine the reliability of the instrument which yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.89. Findings revealed that the teachers used the one sentence summary, closed book assessment strategies, open book time, oral assessment techniques and Practical Work Assessment Techniques but they do not use the Minute's paper. Application cards and use table of specification for test construction among others. Recommendations were made among others that the various schools' authorities should prevail on FCT teachers to use other assessment techniques and strategies.
