AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE AWARENESS AND EXTENT OF UTILIZATION OF INNOVATIVE METHODS OF ASSESSMENT BY ACADEMIC STAFF OF UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA


Abstract Besides the introduction of computer-based tests, assessment of learning outcomes in Nigeria has not fully embraced the wholesale innovations available in that area. This study investigated the awareness level of the academic staff of south-eastern Nigerian universities about innovative methods of assessmentand ascertained the extent to which they utilized the methods. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and was guided by four (4) research questions and three (3) hypotheses. The population of the study consisted of all students and academic staff of universities in South-eastern Nigeria. The sample size was 330 respondents, made up of 90 academic staff, 150 undergraduate students and 90 postgraduate students which selected from six (6) public universities in south-eastern Nigeria, using multi-stage sampling procedure. Academic Staff Awareness and Utilization of Innovative Assessment Methods Questionnaire (ASAUIAMQ) and Academic Staff Utilization of Innovative Assessment Methods Questionnaire (ASUIAMQ) were used to collect data from staff and students respectively. The data was analysed using mean and standard deviation. The results indicated that most academic staff in southeastern Nigerian nniversities are not aware of many innovative assessment strategies. Those who are aware, seldom utilized them. The study recommended that seminars or workshops be organized to educate academic staff of the universities on the importance of using the strategies.
